Healthy Kids Outreach and Enrollment Program
The Suncoast Health Council (SHC) operated the Healthy Kids Outreach and Enrollment Program in Pinellas County, Florida from October 2005- September 2007. The program was a community-based network or children's services agencies that assist families in applying for Florida KidCare coverage. Outreach workers provide community education about KidCare coverage, one-on-one enrollment support; and payment of initial health insurance enrollment fees for families that qualify.
 About Healthy Kids and KidCare
Healthy Kids is a part of Florida KidCare, the state health insurance program for children and youth under age 19. Healthy Kids is the component of the Florida KidCare program that insures children ages 5-18.
Healthy Kids covers a variety of services including primary medical care, dental services, prescription drugs, specialty care office visits, screenings, x-rays, laboratory tests, hospital care, behavioral health care and substance abuse treatment services.
Most families will qualify for premiums of $15-$20 per month for all children in a family. There is also a full pay option for families whose income is above 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines. The monthly cost for the full-pay program is $120 for each child.
Background
The Suncoast Health Council's Healthy Kids Outreach and Enrollment Program began in 2005 with an in-depth planning process. The Suncoast Health Council developed a Healthy Kids Task Force that brought together individuals and agencies that are committed to the well-being of children. The Healthy Kids Task Force has helped to target communities in need and has decided upon the best outreach methods to reach those communities. The Healthy Kids Outreach and Enrollment Program is proud to partner with a variety of agencies throughout Pinellas County, including R'Club, the YMCA, Neighborhood Family Centers Coalition, and Pinellas County Health Department.
Outreach and Enrollment Activities
Each month our Outreach and Enrollment partners reached out to hundreds of families in both traditional and non-traditional ways. In 2005-2006 the Suncoast Health Council's Healthy Kids program was represented at more than ninety-five outreach and enrollment activities that reached approximately 5,000 families. SHC also had a very successful partnership with H&R Block where we helped distribute 3,000 applications and program information to families who were having their taxes done.
The Healthy Kids program is represented at numerous health fairs, screening events, and children's activities. Program staff frequently visits businesses, housing communities, libraries, government offices, and social service agencies to distribute information and educate both staff and consumers.
